Minusplus XX – 20th birthday mashup exhibition

WE ARE MINUSPLUS Minusplus is an independent, 20-person architecture and design studio based in Budapest. We provide sustainable and innovative design solutions. We are sentient human beings, we love harmony and beauty. Our interest is faithfully reflected in the diversity of our works. We enjoy what we do, and this is clearly visible in our buildings as well. Our plans are surrounded by continuous professional interest, our buildings are regularly published and rewarded with prizes. WE CREATE INSPIRATIONAL SPACES The main ambition of our team is to design buildings that encourage the activities within them. We explore new contexts and re-interpret the relationship of spaces and their habitants. We believe this makes the world around us a better place. WE ARE CURIOUS Our method is discovery: we create the setpoints of the plan from the analysis and interpretation of the given situation. We dare to ask and search for new solutions, for this we systematically research architecture and develop our own capabilities. We are convinced that the question is the most important driving force that starts a change. WE COOPERATE Our working method is receptive, therefore our architectural responses are various and colorful. We believe that harmonizing different approaches will advance our world and build our environment. WE MAKE IT HAPPEN We stand with two feet on the ground: our ideas are innovators, but we always work out ways to make them feasible.

Minusplus turned 20 years old. Besides what we think about architecture, who are we together? Our designs are always the result of teamwork, a joint creation. However, during the continuous cooperations, the individual contours are not sharply drawn. We thought that this birthday would be a good time to sketch them, so now we created something separately together. A mashup is a piece of music that creates a new, independent piece from two or more existing tracks. We used this method to make our objects. We asked our colleagues to choose their favorite project and add their individuality and interests to create their own artwork related to it. We organized a one-month exhibition of the completed works at a special location, in the disused, yet grandiose attic of the Architects' House. The guiding thread for the installation design was the principle of lining and wrapping the abandoned space, so its characteristic elements were the bubble wrap and the custom-made, branded adhesive tape. The contents of the exhibition were also published in the form of a catalogue, plus some merchandising items, such as birthday T-shirts or uniquely canned beers were made for the related events. Since we wanted the completed works to come to life beyond the exhibition and serve a useful purpose, we decided to put them up for auction as part of a charity event. In the end, all 19 works of art that went under the hammer on the auction found owners, to which were added the incomes from the merch items, so a total donation of 2500 € was collected. The entire sum was offered to the From the Streets to Apartments! Association, to support the homeless and people living in housing poverty.
