Text presentation of the author/office in English

AAIM Architecture is a multidisciplinary office with vast experience in architectural design and interior design. Founded in 2016 in Bucharest, the office specializes in architectural projects for residential, commercial, and hospitality industries. AAIM Architecture began as a collaboration between founding members Andrei Mitruș, Simona Meilescu, and Alexandra Mitruș-Ion. Initially, they worked on small personal projects alongside their daily occupations. This collaboration became permanent in 2021, after more than 15 years of professional experience. Currently, the office is engaged in projects focusing on urban planning, the development of residential and commercial complexes of various sizes, as well as interior design projects. Although the office is based in Bucharest, their projects are spread throughout the country, predominantly in the western and central regions. The first project that brought the firm recognition in several specialized competitions was The Lake Home, for which they received various awards and national recognition. Through their work, the office aims to provide honest, relevant, and quality-focused responses to the challenges posed by the continuous evolution of the urban fabric, striving to make no compromises regarding the overall quality of their projects and the final design appearance.

Project description in English

The Lake Home project is part of a bigger vision and a masterplan that aims to revive a former industrial area surrounding the only lake in Sibiu, Binder Lake. Between the years 1865-1945, the Gustav Binder brick factory operated here, an activity that also led to the formation of a lake in the clay extraction area. After World War II, the company Construcții SA was established, producing prefabricated structures on the studied land. Over time, the city expanded with residential areas towards this point, without, however, surpassing the boundaries of the industrial zone, which until recently was seen as a barrier. The first phase of this project consists in an apartment building. While maintaining the initial volume of the existing construction , a new metallic structure was created to allow the addition of three stories for the new apartment block. In this way the former building is part of the new façade creating a more dynamic and vivid look. The use of materials such as brick, steel and glass relate to the original industrial character of the complex. The brick and structural steel are featured on the exterior of the first two levels, mirroring the functional and rational architecture of the past. The previous building structure had a typical grid tailored for workers housing. Each unit had a single room similar to a student housing structure. In the refurbishment process into an apartment building the existing structure was kept and two previous units were connected into one double studio. These new types of units offer the residents a separate night area (bedroom and bathroom) and a separate day area (living room and kitchen). The square-shaped balconies with depths greater than 2m give the residents the opportunity to use the space better, by being able to fit outdoor furniture in it. It was considered important to create as many functional outdoor areas as possible, encouraging outdoor activities and generating a sense of inhabited space. Stylistically, the use of various textures for the façade composition creates a vibrant, dynamic rhythm. The exclusive use of brick on the first two levels also reinforces the heightened attention given to the relationship between the building and the human interaction.
